How to make Shawarma at Home

Making shawarma at home is super easy. It will also let you do some fun with ingredients. You can add ingredients according to your choice while assembling.

Ingredients

For the best chicken shawarma, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 kilogram of Boneless Chicken (preferably chicken thighs with no bone as it is juicier than chicken breast)
  • 2 tablespoons of Cooking Oil
  • Salt as per your requirement
  • 1 tablespoon of Black Pepper
  • 3 tablespoons of Mustard Paste
  • 1 tablespoon of Cumin Powder
  • ½ tablespoon of White Pepper Powder
  • ½ cup of Tahini
  • 2 tablespoons of Garlic Paste
  • ½ cup of White Vinegar
  • 4 teaspoons of Lemon Juice
  • ½ cup of chopped Parsley
  • 4 tablespoons of Yogurt
  • 2 medium-sized Tomatoes (sliced)
  • 2 medium-sized Onions (sliced)
  • 2 cups of Lettuce leaf (shredded)
  • 1 medium-sized Carrot (sliced)
  • 8 Pita Bread
  • 3 tablespoons of Sugar
  • 1 cup of Milk
  • 1 kilogram of Mayonnaise

Directions

I love this recipe because of its simplicity. You will love it too after making this particular recipe for the first time. These are the directions to make shawarma at home.

  • Wash the chicken pieces and cut them.
  • Mix these ingredients to prepare the marinade. Mix well: yogurt, 1 tsp black pepper, 2 tbsp mustard paste, 1 tbsp salt, 1 tsp white pepper powder, 1 tbsp cumin powder, ½ cup vinegar.
  • Apply this marinade to the chicken and leave it for about 2 to 3 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to 200 degrees temperature. Bake the marinated chicken in the oven at the same temperature for 10 minutes. You can cook the chicken on the stove as well.
  • For cooking on the stove, take a pan, add cooking oil and chicken pieces, and let it cook on low to medium flame.
  • There are two delicious sauces for you to add to the shawarma. You can both sauce recipes at the end of this recipe.
  • Assembling time is here, take pita bread (you can use tortilla bread as well), slightly heat the bread over the pan, apply 1 tbsp of tahini sauce, and place sliced chicken, and onions, tomatoes, lettuce leaves, and carrots. You can add cucumber as well.
  • You can add Cucumber and Carrot pickles to it. Cut the cucumber and carrot into long thin strips (do not add cucumber seeds). Dip them in vinegar for 2 hours. Your pickle for shawarma is ready.
  • On the top of the chicken and vegetables apply special mayonnaise sauce. Roll the pita bread and wrap it with baking paper or aluminum foil.
  • You can serve it as a shawarma platter also. Place pita bread with chicken and vegetables on a plate with the sauces. In this way, people can make their wraps as well.

Special Homemade Sauces

Mayonnaise sauce is my husband’s secret and the best recipe of all time. Same for Tahini sauce is also my hubby’s secret recipe. My husband is a Chief Chef by profession. These dips are super delicious for using in shawarma. 

  • The first one is Special Mayonnaise Sauce. In 1 kg of mayonnaise, add 1 tsp of salt, 3 tbsp of sugar, 30 grams of mustard paste, 1 cup milk, 1 tsp black pepper, 3 to 4 tsp lemon juice, and 2 tbsp of garlic paste. Mix well.
  • The second sauce is Tahini Sauce. Add ½ cup of tahini, ½ cup of lukewarm water, 1 tablespoon of finely chopped garlic, some lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Mix well until the creamy texture.
